16:30-18:15: MacJannet Prize for Global Citizenship Ceremony- Eight outstanding programs from Talloires Network member universities will be presented with awards in a special ceremony to honor their achievements.
Each year, the Talloires Network and the MacJannet Foundation bring together student and staff representatives of winning programs for several days of workshops and discussions before formally receiving the Prize in an Award Ceremony. In 2009 and 2010, the ceremony was held at the Tufts University European Center in Talloires, France. In 2011, the Talloires Network and MacJannet Foundation will hold the ceremony in Madrid, Spain. This gathering is an exciting opportunity for participants to exchange information, learn from one another’s experiences, and build relationships with their peers around the world.

10:30-11:30: Keynote speech by Jennifer Corriero, co-founder of TakingITGlobal
Jennifer Corriero is co-founder and Executive Director of TakingITGlobal, a non-profit organization with the aim of fostering cross-cultural dialogue, strengthening the capacity of youth as leaders and increasing awareness and involvement in global issues through the use of technology. In 2005, Jennifer was named a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum and in 2007, as one of Canada’s Top 100 Most Powerful Women by the Women’s Executive Network and as a York University Bryden Alumni Award winner.
Ms. Corriero’s speech will be followed by 15 minutes of question and answer.

B1: Workshop: Expanding economic opportunities for youth
The Talloires Network, in partnership with the MasterCard Foundation, is developing a proposed global initiative to mobilize university resources to expand economic opportunities for marginalized youth in developing countries. This session will invite participants to contribute to planning a set of demonstration projects to develop young people’s job skills and entrepreneurial abilities, and to strengthen public policies.

B6: The Civic University: bringing together community engagement and sustainable development
The session will introduce the concept of the civic university as a way of thinking about the links between a university’s engagement with the community and its contribution to sustainable development locally and globally. The civic university is defined as ‘ providing opportunities for the society of which it forms part; engaging as a whole with its surroundings, not piecemeal; partnering with other local universities and colleges and managed in a way that enables it to participate fully in the region in which it forms part. While it operates on a global scale, it uses its location to help form its identity and provide opportunities for it to grow and help others, including individual learners, businesses and public institutions, to do so too’. A case study will be presented and participants will then work in groups to identify the drivers and barriers to civic engagement in their own institutions and the leadership challenges inside and outside of the university in realizing the opportunities and overcoming the barriers

The Engaged University is the most up-to-date and comprehensive account available on the global civic engagement movement in higher education. It is being published by Francis and Taylor as part of their series: International Studies in Higher Education. Leaders of the 20 Talloires Network institutions who are profiled in The Engaged University will be recognized and join in releasing it at the conference. All participants will receive a free copy.
